This page explains how Field Notes From Everywhere makes money, and how we keep that separate from which books we recommend.

How our recommendations are chosen

Our lists come from research into what real readers recommend: we gather the books readers recommend across many independent discussions, check each recommendation, and look at which books readers keep putting forward. You can read more about how we find the books. No one can pay to have a book included in a list, or to change where it ranks.

How FNFE makes money

FNFE is free to read. To keep it that way, we earn money in these ways:

• The Reading Room, our paid daily email.
• Advertising. We plan to show ads on our site and in our emails, served by advertising networks. The networks, not us, usually choose which ads you see. We don't endorse the products in ads.
• Sponsorships. Brands, publishers or authors may pay us to feature them on our site, in our emails, or on our social media, such as Pinterest and Reddit.
• Affiliate links. Some links to books or products may be affiliate links, which means we earn a small commission if you buy something after clicking. It doesn't cost you anything extra.

Today, our income comes from The Reading Room. We're adding the others as FNFE grows.

How we label it

• Sponsored articles, emails and social media posts are clearly labelled as sponsored (for example "Sponsored", "Paid partnership" or #ad) wherever they appear.
• Ads are visually separate from our own content.
• Pages and emails that contain affiliate links say so.
• Sponsors can pay for a clearly labelled feature, but never for a place in our reading lists, a higher ranking, or a better description.

Free copies and gifts

If a publisher or author sends us a free book or anything else of value, it doesn't affect our reading lists, and we'll say so wherever it's relevant.
